Biography
Anderson da Silva is a Brazilian-American mixed martial artist who was born on April 14, 1975, in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was raised by his aunt and uncle. He learned jiu-jitsu by practising with other children in his neighbourhood. Anderson is considered by many to be the greatest MMA fighter of all time. Before becoming a professional fighter, Anderson Silva worked at McDonald’s and also worked as a file clerk.
Silva made his professional debut in 1997 in Brazil in the welterweight category with a pair of wins. His first loss was in 2000 to Luiz Azeredo by decision. He was put up against Shooto champion Hayato Sakurai in August 2001 and won by unanimous decision after three rounds and became the new Shooto Middleweight Champion and the first man to beat Sakurai. Sakurai who was undefeated in his first 20 fights.
Anderson Silva signed with the UFC in 2006. He made his debut against Chris Leben and won, just 49 seconds into the first round. He also got a victory against Rich Franklin, claiming the middleweight title. Silva defended his title successfully and moved up to light heavyweight where he defeated James Irvin.
After years of success, he lost to Chris Weidman in 2012. A rematch was fixed but it also went badly for Silva. He suffered serious fractures to his left leg and required extensive surgery which took months to heal. Anderson returned to the UFC in 2015, won his first fight. He was however suspended for testing positive for numerous illegal substances.
Silva has three sons and two daughters with his wife, Dayane.
