Saberhagen is a star pitcher in Major League Baseball for 16 seasons, from 1984 to 1999, and again in 2001. He won two Cy Young Awards, was a three-time All-Star, and was the Most Valuable Player of the 1985 World Series. Saberhagen was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1964. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 19th round of the 1982 draft. He made his major league debut in 1984 and quickly became one of the best pitchers in the American League.

In 1985, Saberhagen won the Cy Young Award with a 20-6 record and a 2.87 ERA. He also helped the Royals win the World Series, and was named the Most Valuable Player. Saberhagen won another Cy Young Award in 1989 when he went 23-7 with a 2.16 ERA. He also led the American League in wins and ERA that year. Saberhagen was traded to the New York Mets in 1992.

He continued to be a productive pitcher for the Mets, but he was never quite as good as he was during his time with the Royals. Saberhagen was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1995.
