Prior to his acting career, he had served in the U.S. Navy. In the 1960's, he was licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard to captain commercial vessels. From 1969, he also qualified as a marine surveyor, often appearing as witness in marine court cases. He further held a Certified Real Estate Appraiser License and was a member of the American Arbitration Association Commercial Panel.
