The super talented actress was born as CynthiaAnn Smith in Gibson City, Illinois, USA on June 23, 1957. At the age of one and a half years old, she was adopted by a Canadian couple named Noreen E. and Vernon McDormand.

Noreen has worked as a registered nurse and receptionist and her husband Vernon McDormand is a pastor at Disciples of Christ Church. Due to their childless marriage, the couple decided to adopt Frances and her sister Dorothy. Dorothy is an ordained minister of the Disciples of Christ Church while Frances has pursued a career in acting.

While growing up, Frances went to Monessen High School and graduated in 1975. After graduation, she enrolled at Bethany College in West Virginia where she earned a bachelor’s degree in theater in 1979. Frances also attended Yale School of Drama where she earned an MFA.

After graduation, Frances McDormand, along with her friend Holly Hunter, moved to New York where she began her professional acting career. Holly introduced her to the Coen brothers named Ethan Coen and Joe Coen whom she later married. Frances began working with the brothers when she first starred in Derek Walcott’s play called Trinidad and Tobago in 1982. She later made her first film appearance in 1984 when she starred in a film titled Blood Sample, the film was directed and produced by the Coen brothers.
