Fulgencio Batista y Zaldvar (Spanish: [fulxensjo atista I saldiar]; January 16, 1901 – August 6, 1973) was President of Cuba from 1940 to 1944 and dictator from 1952 to 1959 until being deposed by the Cuban Revolution. Batista came to power as part of the “Revolt of the Sergeants” in 1933, which toppled Gerardo Machado’s dictatorial dictatorship. Batista subsequently elevated himself to the position of colonel as head of the armed forces, essentially controlling the five-member Presidency. He kept control of Cuba via a succession of puppet presidents until 1940, when he was elected President on a populist platform. He subsequently established the Cuban Constitution of 1940, which was deemed progressive at the time and lasted until 1944. He stayed in the United States after his tenure ended, before returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952. Faced with a likely electoral loss, he launched a military coup that forced the election to be postponed.
When Batista regained power, he suspended the 1940 Constitution and abolished most political rights, including the right to strike. He subsequently formed an alliance with the country’s richest landowners, who controlled the biggest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnant economy that exacerbated the divide between wealthy and poor Cubans. Batista’s increasingly corrupt and repressive government then began to profit systematically from the exploitation of Cuba’s commercial interests, negotiating lucrative deals with the American mafia, which controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution industries in Havana, as well as with large multinational American corporations that had made significant investments in Cuba.
