Medlocke grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and was also nurtured by his grandparents. Rickey learnt to play the banjo from his grandfather, Shorty Medlocke, who was a well-known blues musician. He began performing at a young age and gradually improved his musical abilities; for example, at the age of five, he was already learning to play the guitar, and three years later, he began playing the drums. Over the next few years, he proceeded to master numerous musical instruments, including keyboards, mandolin, and dobro, while also teaching himself to sing. He decided to join the band Blackfoot after graduating from high school, of which he was the lead guitarist and lead vocalist.
Rickey worked as a studio musician, drummer, and/or lead singer with Lynyrd Skynrd in the 1970s; some of the songs he sang at this time include “White Dove,” “Preacher’s Daughter,” and “One More Time.” While playing drums, he developed a yearning to play guitar again, which led to the band’s reformation and the production of songs such as the hit “Train, Train” and the “Highway Song,” both written by Medlocke and Jakson Spires. At this moment, his net worth began to rise, although the group would finally disintegrate in the early 1990s.
Medlocke pondered alternative options until he received a call from Gary Rossington, encouraging him to join Lynyrd Skynyrd as lead guitarist and songwriter. He rejoined the band and performed a number of their older songs, including “Free Bird” and “Workin’ For MCA.”
He’s been a member of the band since then, but he’s also collaborated with other performers including Shooter Jennings and Blackberry Smoke. Lynyrd Skynyrd has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, and Medlocke’s net worth has increased as a result of their popularity.
