She was raised in the town of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her mother was English and her father was a Brazilian of Portuguese, Spanish and Irish ancestry.

On October 23, 1982, O’Neill suffered a gunshot wound in her home on McClain Street in Bedford, New York.
