“Shorty” Shorthouse (born January 31, 1970 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian sports broadcaster located in Vancouver who specialises in hockey. He is the lead play-by-play commentator for the Vancouver Canucks on the television station Rogers Sportsnet Pacific and on the radio station “Team 1040” for Canucks games that are not broadcast on Sportsnet. He also works as a colour analyst for the Vancouver Canucks on the radio station “Team 1040.” Shorthouse started his broadcasting career in 1993 as a reporter for the local television station CKVU-TV. He was a co-anchor of the popular late-night sports show Sports Page, which aired on ESPN.com. In 1996, while still employed by CKVU, he started working as a reporter for Canucks pay-per-view telecasts. On March 24, 1998, he called his first NHL hockey game in the play-by-play position, against the New York Islanders, as a replacement. This game was noteworthy because it was the first time that popular former Canucks Trevor Linden and Gino Odjick had returned to the ice together. When CTV Sportsnet (now Rogers Sportsnet) was launched the following season, the Canucks significantly increased their local television coverage, and Shorthouse was recruited to share play-by-play responsibilities with Hall of Famer Jim Robson. 

The Canucks went on to win the Stanley Cup that season. Additionally, when Jim Hughson was assigned to national Sportsnet telecasts, he stepped in on the radio broadcast team. The next year, Robson resigned, and Shorthouse took over as the regular radio play-by-play announcer, with Hughson transitioning to full-time television work. From 1999–2000 until 2007–08, he was the radio voice of the Vancouver Canucks, sharing the role with colour commentator Tom Larscheid. After the Vancouver Canucks’ broadcasting rights were taken away from rival radio station CKNW in 2006, the two made the switch to CKNW. In contrast to his enthusiastic colleague Larscheid, Shorthouse was often seen as the more level-headed of the two. In March 2008, Jim Hughson resigned from his job as play-by-play announcer for the Vancouver Canucks on Rogers Sportsnet in order to devote his full time to CBC telecasts, making the position vacant. As of June 3, 2008, Shorthouse has been named as the new director of research and development. John is currently the voice of the Vancouver Canucks on television for every game aired on Rogers Sportsnet; for every other game, he is the voice of the Canucks on the Team 1040 radio station in Vancouver. Rick Ball calls the action during both home and away games when Shorthouse is shown on television.
