Phillip Herron Died of Suicide After Waiting for Universal Credit
Being unemployed and lacking money causes the most stress and trauma for everyone. Still, it causes the most pressure and trauma for a father with three children because he wants to fulfill their needs, so he decides to kill himself and leave this world.
On March 18, 2019, in Sacriston, County Durham, England, Philip Herron,34, allegedly committed suicide after waiting weeks for his Universal Credit installments as he was a father-of-three was jobless, a single parent, and only had £4.61 in his bank account.
Due to a lack of money, it was hard for Phillip to support his family while also making payments on a £20,000 debt.
Financial hardship resulted from Mr. Herron leaving his manufacturing career to take care of his younger children. His mother, Sheena Derbyshire, shared his thoughts which he wrote in a suicidal letter that his family might be happy in his absence.
No one knows about the events that happened in his life because he kept them secret from his family. Even a hidden Bernicia Homes eviction notice was discovered at his home by Ms. Derbyshire.
When his mother got his son’s mobile phone passcode, she discovered many calls demonstrating how her son’s behavior changed in the months before his passing.
“This is the final photograph of Phillip Herron, 34, crying in his car, literally minutes before he took his own life.
He was a single Dad of three young children, struggling with escalating debt of over £20,000, and was desperately waiting for a universal credit payment he’d applied for. But it’s paid in arrears, with a 5-week wait time. That wait drove him even deeper into debt, and when he died, he had £4.61 in his bank account and clearly couldn’t see any other way out.
Like many people, especially men, he kept all of this to himself; nobody else knew how bad things were getting. The poor bloke even had to tell his children that Father Xmas hadn’t come this year, and in his suicide note, he wrote that they’d be better off if he weren’t there anymore.
We need to talk more. We need to be kinder. And we need to be a country that helps people when they need it the most.”
