Richard Childress is a former NASCAR driver and the current owner of Richard Childress Racing (RCR).
Childress was born on September 21, 1945, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has become one of the wealthiest in his city of birth.
In 1969, Childress’ NASCAR career began and he competed as an independent driver under the number 96 as of 1971.
He never recorded a win as a driver, although he did finish in the top five six times, seventy-six times, and five times in the top 10, with a career-best fifth place in 1975.
But in 1974, he did triumph in the unofficial invitational Metrolina 200.
Childress announced his retirement from racing in 1981. Dale Earnhardt, the driver for Osterlund, declined to take the wheel for Stacy.
He started a vineyard in the Yadkin Valley AVA close to Lexington in 2004.
He was on the National Rifle Association’s board of directors.
In 2016, Childress was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
