The DeBarge Family History and Background
The DeBarge family history started when Arthur DeBarge migrated from France. His grandson, Robert Sr, and Etterlene then started the DeBarge Family.
Robert DeBarge Sr served in the United States Armed Forces based in Cicero, Illinois, and met Etterlenein in the early 1950s, the pair tied the knot in 1953 when Robert was 21 and Etterlenein was just 17 years old.
The pair settled in Detroit in the predominantly black section of the city and welcomed ten children. Robert and Etterlenein later moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1972 and pulled the plug on their marriage two years later in 1974 after 21 years of being married.
Robert and Etterlenein’s ten children made impressive progress in the music industry and made music mostly in the rhythm and blues genre. They formed a recording group named DeBarge made up exclusively of the siblings, the youngest two siblings never joined the group.
The musical group enjoyed early success and their 4th album Rhythm of the Night (1985) became the most successful one by going platinum. However, after their fourth album, siblings, El and Bunny DeBarge left the group to pursue their solo career.
Although the two departing members were quickly replaced by two siblings Bobby and Chico, they could not continue the stardom any further effectively putting an end to their group. DeBarge released their last album Back on Track on July 1, 1991, which did not perform well in the US charts.
While the members of the DeBarge family enjoyed success in their solo career or with other bands around Michigan, they never reconciled and performed together after the release of their 5th and final studio album in 1991. El found the most success in his solo career as compared to his siblings.
Where Are The Debarge Family Now
The DeBarge Family now enjoy their solo careers and Eldra DeBarge is still performing music. Robert Sr, Robert Jr, and Thomas DeBarge are no longer alive.
The downfall of DeBarge family started with the two prominent brothers El and Bunny DeBarge leaving the musical group after releasing their fourth studio album in 1985. While they were replaced the band soon fell apart eventually disbanding after their final album Back on Track in 1991.
Now, only 9 out of 12 original members of the family survive. Both Robert Sr. and Jr. passed away decades ago and Thomas recently passed away in 2021 after being hospitalized for kidney failure, he had also contracted coronavirus at the time, according to BET.
Bobby DeBarge wife Teri DeBarge shares two children Christain and Bobby III before the singer passed away on August 16, 1995, aged 39 years old. He died of AIDS complications.
Eldra “El” DeBarge is still making music and giving performances, he is comparatively the most successful among all other DeBarge siblings. Since disbanding from his family group, El released 5 studio albums.
According to Michigan Chronicles, El deviated from his life and track after falling victim to drug addiction but he has pulled himself back to the track now. He released his latest studio album Second Chance in 2010 after rediscovering himself and conquering his addiction.
However, other siblings from the family maintain a much quieter life. All the siblings have their own family and are parents and grandparents to their numerous children and grandchildren.
The third generation of the DeBarge family is now taking the family legacy on their shoulders, the third generation has emerged as aspiring musical artists and actors. Among others, Bobby DeBarge III, son of the late Bobby DeBarge has become a successful singer.
