Bart And Shannon Millard Love Story
Bart and Shannon met in 1988 at a church youth group, Shannon was 13 and Bart was 15 years old. Their courtship took almost a decade, and almost every step of the Millards’ marriage journey has coincided with MercyMe’s journey.
Both MercyMe and the couple have grown considerably. The Millards have grown to a family of seven, while
the band has enjoyed tremendous success with several albums going gold and platinum.
Mercyme has enjoyed making 17 radio singles hit the No. 1 spot in the category of Christian Airplay on Billboard’s chart, the band has been crowned Billboard’s Christian Songs Artist of the Decade. MercyMe has been on the lead in creating solid Christian content—which has seen them accumulate a heap of music industry awards.
MercyMe has been invited to performed at prestigious venues across the country and even did a cameo in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Additionally, 2018 saw the release of ‘I Can Only Imagine,’ a motion picture based on Bart’s childhood, and his memoir also having the same name.
The band’s longevity and continued ascension have meant a lot of re-entry moments for Bart — and
life adjustments by both Bart and Shannon.
“For about 15 years, I was always trying to find a routine in the midst of all the stops and starts
and finally just surrendered,” Shannon states. “I’ve talked with other musician’s wives, and it’s so
comforting to know they haven’t figured it out either.”
Having a smooth re-entry process is still a work in progress, but some changes have been a
hit.
“When Bart used to come home, [the family] would expect him to be there for us right away, but he
was depleted,” Shannon recalls.
For a solution, the first day is a freebie, a “day of rest for dad.” Everything is full
speed after that.
There is no marquee or spotlights in the couples’ home; no one gets to be treatment uneven. With children
in different phases, from grade school to high school, the days are concentrated with homeschooling,
shuttling kids to extracurricular activities and keeping everything else in the house moving on.
“When I’m back, it’s less about ‘celebrate [because] Dad is here’ and more ‘let’s regroup and have
time together,’ ” Bart says. “My goal is to do everything [for the band] on the road so I can be
fully present when I’m home.”
Family time is a premium part of their marriage, so Bart and Shannon intentionally plan shared activities. But the
fun is also balanced with things that need to be done although they do have a chore chart. The whole family writes down
everything they love — and don’t love — to do. Then weekly tasks are identified and then each family member is given theirs.
“There’s less complaining because everyone is doing more of what they enjoy,” Shannon narrates.
For example, Shannon does not fancy wearing the chauffeur hat, but Bart gladly sits behind the wheel
— even on the very first day at home.
“I love driving. It’s actually one of my greatest joys,” he tells. “The kids and I get to hang out
and talk.”
Also, don’t be shocked if you spot Bart wandering around town in the evening. “I love grocery shopping, so
I signed up for that task,” he explains. “But I’ll go at midnight when nobody is there and just put my
headphones on,” he goes on.
Although it’s not on theie developed chore chart, the couple has a plan for managing one of the biggest
challenge in marriage. “Shannon takes care of the bills,” Bart discloses. “She’s amazing at it. We’d
probably be in prison if I was doing them.”
“I’m the saver, and he’s the spender, but after 22 years, we’ve worked on that,” Shannon adds on.
According to Bart, the pair were “dirt poor back in the day.” Years of managing budgets and better
money utilization have made an enormous difference — with some exceptions. “Shannon spends on necessities.
I end up spending on the dumbest things possible,” Bart narrates. “Luckily, my wife is good at returning
things.”
Another hurdle is making sure they spend quality time together. The arrangements of five kids plus
Bart’s responsibilities with MercyMe can put romance at stake.
“Sometimes our kids hear, ‘Mom and Dad need some time with each other. We love you, but we’ll do
something with you later,’ ” Shannon tells. “There are seasons we do well and seasons we kinda fail,
but we’re always trying.”
“We’re affectionate with each other in front of our kids,” Bart explains further. “I know they’re watching, and
I know that plays a part in how they’ll treat the person they’ll be with.”
Date nights are always a must, but they have seen those shift from once a week (when they lived close to
family) to roughly once every month. They have tought themselves creativity when time is limited. Some of the most used hacks are grabbing coffee and getting lost on a backcountry road or a lunch rendezvous when dinner is not
feasible.
No matter how fixed life seems, Bart and Shannon make sure they create their own annual marriage retreat. “We set
aside time without the kids, getaway, regroup and fall in love again,” Bart narrates. “I wouldn’t trade
those moments for anything.”
“The kids know it’s our week to renew our marriage,” Shannon adds on.
Bart and Shannon’s commitment to each other has stood through the test of time. Their first born
is Type 1 diabetes, that has challenged them as parents. Shannon’s brother’s death in a car accident shook them in
2004; Bart’s battling period with depression left him opting to leave the band; and at
times Shannon felt as if she was living separate lives with Bart.
Bart’s travel was challenging on the kids, too. “Our kids tended to be more angry with Bart because he
was gone on the weekends,” Shannon explains. “Even if I tried to fill in, you can’t replace Dad.”
“I couldn’t do it anymore,” Bart states. “I looked at Shannon and said, ‘It’s time to fix what’s
broken. I’m doing ministry, and I’m doing family — but family has to win every time.’ I had to be
home more.”
The couple has taken drastic measures to put family first, including relocating from Dallas to
Nashville five years ago. The change lets Bart to be closer to his
bandmates and the music industry, so doesn’t have to leave town as much. Plus, the band has cut their touring schedule
from nearly 250 dates a year to not more than 60.
